# How to Become a Gitcoin Council Member

Council members are appointed through a structured nomination and selection process, ensuring high-caliber participation.

1. Election Phase (1 week):
   * Community vote using GTC tokens
   * Top 5 candidates selected
   * Minimum voting threshold required
2. **Nomination & Selection (1.5 weeks):**
   * Delegates and community members can nominate candidates or self-nominate on a designated governance post.
   * Candidates must meet the **basic qualifications** and demonstrate their ability to contribute effectively.
   * Candidates will be expected to introduce themselves in a community call
3. **Election (1 week):**
   * The existing Governance Council and community vote to ratify selected members.
   * The top 5 candidates will be selected to join the council
   * The vote will require a minimum voting threshold to be considered valid.
4. **Onboarding & Training (1 week):**
   * Newly appointed members undergo an **onboarding process** to familiarize themselves with governance expectations, tools, and responsibilities.
   * Mandatory **security training** and access provisioning to governance and communication platforms.
